Employment and Volunteering
The Department has 4 ways to become a member. Membership in the department is a rewarding opportunity. Becoming a first responder is time consuming and challenging. It is a high level of commitment but it also brings a high level of satisfaction. Members who live near one of our stations can respond from home while others staff one of our three stations in an on duty or standby status. PART TIME FIREFIGHTER/EMT
Part time Firefighter/EMTs staff one of our 3 stations. Part time Firefighter/EMTs respond to fires, medical calls and other needs for service. When not on calls Firefighter/EMTs constantly train for emergencies as well as maintain our equipment and stations. Firefighter 1 and EMT Basic certifications are required to apply. NWCG Wildland Firefighter 2 is required to obtain within 6 months of starting employment. Part time Firefighters work 12 hour shifts on a 2 day on 6 day off rotation for an average of 91 hours a month. Additional hours may be available. Part time Firefighters are eligible to participate in state and national mobilizations. 2024 starting pay for Part time Firefighter/EMT is $19.00 per hour.
PART TIME DRIVER OPERATOR
Part time Driver Operators staff one of our 3 stations. Part time Driver Operators respond to fires, medical calls and other needs for service and drive and operate our apparatus at the scene of emergencies. When not on calls Firefighter/EMTs constantly train for emergencies as well as maintain our equipment and stations. Firefighter 1, Firefiighter 2 and EMT Basic certifications and at least 1 year of experience as a Firefighter/EMT are required to apply. NWCG Wildland Firefighter 2 is required to obtain within 6 months of starting employment. Part time Driver/Operators work 12 hour shifts on a 2 day on 6 day off rotation for an average of 91 hours a month. Additional hours may be available. Part time driver operators are eligible to participate in state and national mobilizations. 2024 starting pay for Part time Driver/Operator is $20.00 per hour.
PART TIME PARAMEDIC
Part Time Paramedics work 24 hour shifts at one of our stations. Due to our call volume, paramedics must be employed full time at another agency that provides primary 911 response. Paramedics are expected to work one shift per month at a minimum. In addition, paramedics must be experienced with 4 years of paramedic experience preferred. Paramedics with at least 10 years of experience can be registered with Sky Valley Fire as their primary agency. 2024 starting pay for Paramedics is $35.00 per hour.
RESIDENT FIREFIGHTER/EMT
The Resident Firefighter/EMT program is designed for people who are looking to find a career in the Fire Service. Residents live at our stations while attending training and working on duty to gain experience. Completion of an EMT Basic program is required to apply or they need to enroll in our next class at department expense. Members who have not completed Firefighter 1 and 2 and NWCG Firefighter 2 will be required to attend the next available training opportunity at department expense. Resident Firefighters participate in a shift rotation and also are expected to respond to calls when off duty as needed. Resident Firefighter/EMTs are eligible to participate in state and national mobilizations. Residents receive and nominal stipend along with housing and all utlities up to the maximum allowed by law which is set at $21,500 for 2024.
VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER/EMT AND VOLUNTEER EMT
Volunteers either respond from home or staff one of our stations in a standby capacity and respond to calls as needed. In addition, volunteer cover open part time shifts due to sick calls, vacations or mobilizations. Volunteers are eligible to participate in state and national mobilizations. Volunteers receive a stipend to offset costs incurred for volunteering up to a maximum of $21,500 annually for the year 2024. Persons who live outside of the Sky Valley are required to have completed either Firefighter 1 or an EMT Basic Program.
Do you live in the communities of Sultan, Gold Bar or Index? Do you have a desire to serve your fellow neighbors? We are continuously looking for community members who can respond from home and want to serve. All training is provided free of charge for those who live in the Skykomish Valley. Volunteers are required by State law to attend a minimum of 20 hours of training per year. In addition, volunteers are required to respond to 24 calls or serve a minimum of 96 hours a year on standby time.
Other Opportunities to Serve
Other options exist for those who have the desire to serve their community but may not have the time or ability to serve as responder. The Sky Valley Firefighters Association is a charitable organization that is open to anyone in the community that can help further the departments mission to help those in need.
